315: TZ Discussion – Two Weeks Late

Justin and Jason discuss Justin’s tendency to argue with himself about code, the strategy board game that Jason and Colby are building together which we saw mentioned in recent Blackout Bingo reviews, the JS 13K Game challenge, Jason’s advice on how to find inexpensive talent on Upwork and how Justin might include these ideas on Nugget, how parents think about after-school coding programs, the Hacker News post asking startup employees how much they made on an exit, the funded vs. the bootstrapped startup model and Jason’s plans for Math Academy, the latest on Operation Superhero and the unreasonable effectiveness of strength training.

@all – We recorded this a couple of weeks ago but we slacked a little bit on the post production. Sorry about that!

  2. Robin says:

Hey guys, great to hear you back recording frequently again, plus imagining you relaxing by the pool at the Pasadena Palace while you record adds a certain quality to the experience :). Plus it feels like the old days with businesses getting built by both of you (felt like it moved away from that for a bit, although not for the worse)

I enjoyed the talk about hiring a designer on UpWork, I am about to do the same so that was a useful section 🙂

Not so sure about you updating your photos, If I see you suddenly age 9 years it might put too much strain on my heart!

I listen to you guys with my husband, and I’m sorry I couldn’t help myself…

    1. Horse ring = arena

    2. Western vs. English training – it’s not about the horses.

Yes, some horse breeds are particularly suited to Western training due to their conformation, like the Quarter Horse. But most of the difference comes from the way the horse is trained to carry the rider.

Western – walk, jog, lope vs. English training – walk, trot, canter, but for the most part any horse can be trained in either style – it’s up to the rider which style they prefer. Most people chose one style or the other based on which disciplines they prefer.

English: dressage, show jumping, cross country, gymkhanas, polo, etc
Western: barrels, cutting, roping, western pleasure, etc

    3. You think it’s expensive now… Just wait until she asks for her first horse! 😉

That being said, as an equestrian myself, I can guarantee that if your daughter decides that horses are her thing, it will be something that will teach her so much about herself and how to be responsible. There’s a lot to learn, and you never stop as it’s a lifelong mission to improve. It’s so worth it.

p.s. Sorry for the giant rant, but it needed to be said. 😛

  4. Jason says:

@All – Actually, it was my fault, not Justin’s. I spent two weeks telling myself I was going to do the show notes tomorrow, but “tomorrow” turned out to be an exceptionally elusive target. My bad, guys.

  5. Jason says:

@Robin – I don’t know, I think I’m looking pretty good these days! And that picture of Justin is so bad, anything will be an upgrade from that. 😉

Also, I’m glad the Upwork conversation proved to be useful.

  6. Jason says:

@Bonita – Thanks so much for the mini-tutorial! I really should spend some time learning what it is Izzy is actually doing and your comment provides a nice starting point. Much appreciated. 🙂

  7. Richard says:

I’ve really enjoyed the recent episodes and a nice surprise to have new ones so regularly. It feels like the old days of TechZing with you both working on products again!

I completely agree with Jason about electronic music and coding, I’ve listed to the same few albums and playlists thousands of times. Electronic film soundtracks also work really well for me (like The Social Network, Ex Machina, etc).
