Justin and Jason discuss their lost episode and the future direction of the show, making 100 users happy, tracking active and paying users on TweetMiner, how word of mouth isn’t viral, whether Justin should try to bootstrap his secret project (you know – the one that isn’t TweetMiner), Jason’s upcoming iPhone app project, metrics of programmer productivity, how quality is fractal, how “scratch your own itch” and minimal viable product are fundamentally incompatible approaches to product development and how the quality of a product is limited by the taste of whomever is running the company.
‘Bout time geezas! 🙂
I was wondering what happened? So, you forgot to press the REC button ‘eh? No worries, I’m glad to “hear you back”.
Btw, I’m loving your Podcast — you guys have a great report(french?), and your mix about life, tech and your personal opinions are fantastic.
In short, I appreciate it guys… and yes your name does suck 🙂
Peace!
Ozzy
@ozzy Thanks so much for the positive feedback. The kind words are very much appreciated. Man, I feel like doing another show already! 😉
Yeah, the name Techzing blows! Who was it that thought of that crap name, anyway? 😉
@ozzy
What Jason said 😉
Okay, so about this name of yours — I think Justin is right; it needs to be Generation Zero!
You’re jingle is (probably) the best thing about your show so I think it’s a no-brainer 🙂
Thanks guys!
@ozzy
Yeah I think “Generation Zero” rocks and it opens all sorts of possibilities for the show.
Hi,
I figured the delay in rolling out the new show was to give Jason time to get his project out in the wild.
A “recording” issue, alas more mundane but quite comical in an evil way.
That said, great opening. I like the randomness of them!
I personally think the name is not an overly important aspect to the show. I guess the name becomes more important as you try and get people “off the street”.
@Jason, put forward your favourite Ethipoian dish.
@Justin, make Jasons favourite Ethiopian dish and tell us your verdict.
@Jason I too have started throwing in some tests, there is something mildly reassuring, moving from dev to live, running tests and then getting the “mythical” green light.
So many thought provoking things, JUST maybe it will inspire me to go into the loft (attic), pull down that dusty box labelled “blog”, take it down, open it up and write a blog.
Great job guys, look forward to 32.
@chris
That’s weird… Shouldn’t HE cook that dish for ME… or “at the very least” take me to his favourite Ethiopian restaurant and get the check! 😉
Oh man I hope your stuff does go viral otherwise Justin is going to laugh at you.
Oh I want to hear more about Justin’s MBA 🙂
I don’t think Tweet Miner has a large enough market for Justin but what’s wrong with 2 or 3 Tweet Miners? Why go for a homer when you can be just as happy with 3 doubles? Or some other baseball analogy that works 🙂
But I have to be honest, I have not heard about Tweet Miner at all since you first advertised which is how I heard about this podcast. Your advertising is not very good. How do you advertise? I think if you fix that you should be able to easily double or triple your monthly subscriptions. But again, the market is probably not big enough.
Now that I’m jabbering, maybe you can make a tweeter for rappers / wannabe celebrities. They use twitter A LOT but then again wannabes are usually too cheap to pay.
@Bopinder Abu Morpalinder Singh
I couldn’t agree more. It’s that old acronym IAMS (it’s all about marketing stupid). I just want to get a couple more features fully finished (friend finder & multi panel) then I will focus mainly on marketing. p.s Love your comment about Jason’s stuff needing to go viral!
@Bopinder Abu Morpalinder Singh I kind of get the sense that Justin will laugh at me regardless, but yeah I hope that what I perceive as viral features actually play out that way.
@chris I also often consider blogging some of my ideas, but I just never seem to have the time and now it’s just so much easier to talk about them on the podcast. I think I’m probably just more of a talker than a writer. I can talk all damn day no problem, but it’s a struggle to get myself to write anything longer than what you’re reading here.
My favorite Ethiopian dish is probably the red lentils although I don’t know what the Ethiopian name for it is.
If Justin wants me to cook something for him then he must be pretty misinformed because I can’t cook. 😉
I can attest that Jason makes a mean batch of Kraft macaroni and cheese. Very tasty stuff. I believe the secret was 9 boxes at a time but I defer to the Chef.
@Phil Okay, so maybe I’ve moved a little beyond the mac & cheese days, but unfortunately not by much.;) Oh, and it was 3 boxes (not quite 9), but nowadays I get sick to my stomach if I try to eat that crap.
Hi,I’m listening your podcast since episode 1 and I find it really interesting. You are a bit more laid back and more real than stackoverflow. An the Uk mood is very european (where I’m from), sometimes, when compared to the Jason’s mood.
I think some of the best parts of the show are the one where you talk about business model tips or direct observation hints you extrapolated from your experience: so, not something you just learned on a book.
So I think that you should, roughly, talk: 1/3 Life 1/3 Tech 1/3 Business. All of these subjects in the widest sense of their meaning.
You have been a kind of nice “friend” somewhere there in the USA. And of course some inspiration for me to bring on my own (side-project(s)-stuff).
bye
P.S.
But what’s the band playing the song in your podcast?
Another enjoyable podcast.
I think your right about not being afraid or worried if you go off topic, as much as I enjoy you tech talk (I must admit I have been inspired by you guys and your projects) most coders have lives outside of our coding world and I enjoy your off topic rants and opinions and anecdotes.
@Alessandro
Thanks so much for the positive feedback. Stack Overflow is one of my favorite podcasts, so it’s feels great to be compared favorably to it. 😉 I think we’re going to try to keep a balance of topics as you suggested. Mix it up, keep it lite and just try to have fun.
The band playing the song in the podcast is Money Penny, which is Justin’s old band. I believe he wrote the song himself.
@Robin
It’s great to hear that we’re able to serve as a kind of inspiration for you, although at this point my guess is that it’s mostly Justin since I still haven’t released my side project. 😉 Good luck with yours and let us know when you release it. We’ll make sure to discuss it on the show.
@Jason Roberts
Maybe Justin should think about “making a new band” his next side/hidden/masked/bat-man/ project 😀
Good song, really, very slack-generation.
P.S.
Oh if you like economic/society podcast (you were talking aboout the one you like), you should give a try to the LSE (london shool of economics) Podcast: they are not boring as the name suggests 😀 and full of good ideas on the world.
Another enjoyable podcast (I’m a few behind at the moment, but catching up). Sometimes I think listening to you guys it seems like the more you learn about each other the less you find in common, which amuses me.
One comment on the idea that a company can only be as good as the top person, I was thinking something similar but different recently. Specifically that the top person isn’t the upper limit on quality but the lower limit on suckyness, no one can get away with sucking more than the top person considers acceptable, but can suck less. Likely there is still an upper limit on how much better that person can make the end result as there will still be dependencies on the rest of the company which may then suck to the maximum allowed limit, or there may be pressure to not invest time in not sucking too much less than the minimum.
I love this observation – “the more you learn about each other the less you find in common” – I’ll bring it up on a show soon 🙂
