Justin and Jason discuss Tweetminer’s frenemy adding feature, the utility of Twitter for non-famous people, functional programming (what the hell is it anyway), the clustering of tech preferences, project Natal and the path to holodeck style entertainment, the story of how Justin lied his way into the tech industry, the value of being a contrarian, and why Justin is taking voice over lessons.
It’s not the shoes, it’s not the player, it’s the team. PHP, Ruby and Java have gigantic ecosystems compared to Lisp, which is a multi-paradigm language.
Great podcast guys, lots of fun.
Very good show. I am hooked, keep’em coming guys!
I was hoping Jason would reveal his secret project, but maybe next time. No pressure.. ๐
“Salut les gars!” (Hi guys).
I nearly swallowed my coffee down the wrong tube when I heard the intro! So funny!
I am French (but living in the U.S. since ’89) and you did pretty well.
I think it is important to try multiple languages, since each language often optimizes unique aspects of programming (e.g. low-level integration in C, recursion in Lisp, closures in Smalltalk and Ruby, web output in PHP, etc.).
And implementing something involved in a new language sometimes displaces your “currently-preferred” language. Smalltalk used to be my preferred language. When Ruby came out I was like “yeah kind of like Smalltalk but so so”, and then years later I became a convert. This does not prevent me to enjoy working in other languages like C#, Javascript and PHP. It just depends on the app or framework you’re working on I guess. So unless you try new languages regularly you don’t if you might end up liking them! ๐
@Bopinder Abu Morpalinder Singh
That’s a great line and very true. I’ll have to remember it.
@Samh
Thanks! I’m glad you’re still a listener after all these episodes. There’s nothing like early adopters. ๐ So, how’s QueryCell coming along? The website looks great.
@Emrah
I know, I know. Not releasing it is killing me!! I’m now working on the UI so hopefully it won’t be much longer.
@Philippe Monnet
Yeah, languages are kind of like food, or books or even countries. While it’s tempting to try to argue which one is best, it’s always a good idea to pick your head up and try something that’s not so familiar.
Ha ha, Jason is having “a random hookup in the park” that was funny.
I’m working on a iPad web app and I’m looking for some help asap. I listen to this podcast religiously so I thought it wouldn’t hurt to ask you guys if you would be interested in coming on to the project. I know that everyone thinks this about their own project but i truly believe that this application is going to be a big deal if the right people are involved. My name is Justice and I’m a 29yr old cs student in Ohio. My cell number is (removed, for privacy purposes) I’ll email you the application proposal if you want. I’m expecting to hear back from some venture capitalist very soon and would love to tell them that one of you guys was on board. I know this is a crazy way to contact someone. Sorry.
@Justice Conder
Hi Justice. I removed your cell number from the post as you probably don’t want that on there! Please send emails to podcast@techzinglive.com. Cheers, Justin ๐
@Jason
QueryCell is coming along great thanks. Sales have increased, I’ve learned a little bit about marketing, it’s good fun.
I’ve also released a new product, CustomerCradle. http://www.customercradle.com
I really enjoy listening to Techzing, I look forward to each new episode. I totally think you need to bite the bullet and release the secret project ๐
Cheers
Sam
@Samh
That’s great to hear! We’ll have to have you on again to talk about your experience. Maybe the one year anniversary would be a good point to take a step back and examine what you’ve learned.
Customer Cradle looks cool. The site is very well done. Good luck with that as well.
I’m really glad you enjoy the show. It always feels great to hear when people like it. I personally have a great time doing the show and really I think it’s just an excuse for Justin and I to sit and have a fun conversation. I always look forward to it.
My secret project is progressing rapidly. Hopefully, I’ll have something out there for the alpha test before the end of the month.
