I really enjoyed this interview. I find it fascinating how reminiscent this seems of the hobby computer movement of the late 1970’s that i’ve read about. It really does seem like the “homebrew computing” stage of synthetic biology. Thanks

@Jeff Whelpley – I’m glad you enjoyed the interview! 😉 I’m always curious and a little concerned, anytime we veer too far away from the core topics of web tech and startups, so it’s nice to get some positive feedback on a show like this.

Cathal is a really interesting guy and knows his stuff, so it was a blast talking to him. I just wish we had had more time because we really only got through about a third of my questions. I guess we’ll need to get him back on sometime soon. 😉

Wow, that guy is awesome! I just love how he is able to relate synthetic biology and all the other related topics to programming. You can tell that he is not only experienced in both biology and computer programming, but he has thought a great deal about how to communicate complex ideas in simple ways. I was really impressed.

I don’t think I would be one of those early adopter types for this field simply because of the long feedback time that Cathal mentioned. As soon as they can figure out a way to get the feedback loops more on the order of minutes than a full day, I am totally in. Even so, I am definitely planning on doing a couple ad hoc experiments with my kids at some point using the equipment he talked about.
