Wow, that guy is awesome! I just love how he is able to relate synthetic biology and all the other related topics to programming. You can tell that he is not only experienced in both biology and computer programming, but he has thought a great deal about how to communicate complex ideas in simple ways. I was really impressed.
I don’t think I would be one of those early adopter types for this field simply because of the long feedback time that Cathal mentioned. As soon as they can figure out a way to get the feedback loops more on the order of minutes than a full day, I am totally in. Even so, I am definitely planning on doing a couple ad hoc experiments with my kids at some point using the equipment he talked about.
Great interview, Jason.
@Jeff Whelpley – I’m glad you enjoyed the interview! 😉 I’m always curious and a little concerned, anytime we veer too far away from the core topics of web tech and startups, so it’s nice to get some positive feedback on a show like this.
Cathal is a really interesting guy and knows his stuff, so it was a blast talking to him. I just wish we had had more time because we really only got through about a third of my questions. I guess we’ll need to get him back on sometime soon. 😉
Hey Jason / Justin……I like the way you’ve shared the interview load lately. Justin has been bringing us smart startups whose stories will help turn us onto the next big thing, while Jason’s focus has been bringing us smart scientists whose projects will help turn us into the next big thing. 🙂
Thanks to you both (and by extension to your guests) for the consistently great interviews!
CHEERS!
David
@David – Thanks so much, I’m glad you’re happy with the change. I think it’s working out pretty well so far, but I guess we’ll see. 😉
I really enjoyed this interview. I find it fascinating how reminiscent this seems of the hobby computer movement of the late 1970’s that i’ve read about. It really does seem like the “homebrew computing” stage of synthetic biology. Thanks
@jordy – That’s exactly what I keep telling everybody and it’s part of what makes the field so exciting I think.
Also, I’m glad you enjoyed the interview. 😉
Great episode!
@Stuart – I’m glad you liked it. 😉 I had a great time talking to Cathal and am already looking forward to having him on again some time.
Dammit, Jason! I don’t have time to get caught up in this as well!
(great episode btw)
@Stian – Yeah, I know what you mean! It’s just too interesting to resist. 😉
