161: TZ Discussion – The Cycle of Life

Justin and Jason discuss why Peter and Alex were asked to fill in for Jason on last week’s show, why our brains seem to get slower over time, Justin’s struggle to remain productive while on his six week “work-cation”, why Jason accepted a full-time consulting contract with Uber, whether it’s worth entering the LAUNCH startup competition if you’re not planning on raising money, the process of setting up the AnyFu bank account, switching some of Uber’s infrastructure from MongoDB to Redis, comparing Uber’s rocket-shipΒ growth rate to it’s humble beginnings, the success of Louis C.K.’s DVD experiment, Jason’s one-dollar Christmas moment, capturing light at a trillion frames per second, the latest breakthrough in solar panel efficiency, why long vacations and retirement are boring, the only real way to stop SOPA, the indefinite detention provision of the NDAA and the FBI’s abuse of National Security Letters, and how Jason’s kids helped him get through his mother’s death.

  1. So sorry to hear the news Jason. Great ending to the show.

  2. Axure says:

Guys, I’m listening to the show this very second and it’s pretty funny to hear my silly comment quoted. πŸ˜‰

Of course it was brusque and of course it was tongue in cheek!
I didn’t mean to be rude, just childish. πŸ˜€

BTW, I’ve listened to your show since ep. 80-something.

  3. Jason says:

@Micah – Thanks so much for the kind words. I really do appreciate it.

Losing your mother is a profoundly awful experience and an extremely awkward subject to discuss in public, but I hope it wasn’t too uncomfortable for people.

  4. Jason says:

@Axure – Yeah, I don’t know why Justin initially took your comment the wrong way. Maybe it’s because English isn’t really his first language. I’m not sure what is, but it’s not English that’s for sure. πŸ˜‰

  5. Ignacio says:

Sorry to hear about your Loss Jason, my affections goes to you and your loved ones.
I’m a great admirer of your advice and work.

  6. Jason says:

@Ignacio – Thanks so much. I really do appreciate the kind sentiment.

  7. Just got around to listening to this. Many condolences Jason to yourself and your family. The fact you found solace through your children really speaks highly of how important it is to enjoy the moments you do have and not get caught up in the small things.

Now about the show. Actually I am with Justin. I am getting a “little” bit tired of the Justin grilling. Was interesting to hear about the internals of Uber. On that mentioned the dispatch server was getting hammered during the peak periods, do you have a plan for how to deal with it should it become overloaded? Im not familiar with node.js but my guess would be sticky session’s and a load balancer?

Anyways Merry Christmas to both of you (and all the happy listeners out there). Stay safe and we should hear from you in 2012.

  8. Axure says:

@Jason, well, actually his is the real English, while yours is American (or Yankee) – a funny dialect of one of the former colonies, right next to Aussie, Canadian and Kiwi. πŸ˜‰

  9. Jason says:

@Ben Boyter – Thank you for that, and you’re right it’s all about focusing on the moment which is one thing kids are very good at.

You’re getting tired of me grilling Justin? Really? Wait, did he ask you to write that? Oh, alright, I’ll give him a reprieve … for a little while. πŸ˜‰

I’ll try to talk a little more about the Uber internals on an upcoming show.

    Merry Christmas to you, too!

  10. Jason says:

@Axure – I’ll consider what Justin speaks to be “English” when he finally manages to get his singular and plural possessives figured out. I know he has some lame excuse about being poorly educated and all that, but he’s had plenty of time to sort it out. πŸ˜‰ I, on the other hand, speak American, damnit!!

  11. Sincere condolences to Jason.

  12. Danilo Celic says:

    @jason, sorry for you loss.

Regarding the Launch conference as a way to set the AnyFu launch deadline: You may end up not seeing your own moment in the sun because the other companies showing off at Launch will be getting theirs.

An unsolicited suggestion regarding marketing AnyFu: I assume you’re going to display an experts profile page. It might be good to add a button(s) that the expert sees in their admin page to be able to post to Facebook, Twitter, etc directly from your site. This way they assist with your marketing by marketing themselves. Perhaps with discount codes as part of the launch and other promotions you may run.

Anyway, keep it going guys, I pull the podcast the moment I see that there’s a new one.

  13. Jason says:

@Danilo Celic – Thank you for the kind words.

Your idea for the “post to Facebook, Twitter, etc”, is a good one and makes a lot of sense. I think we’ll probably steal it. πŸ˜‰

  14. @Jason, I’m so sorry for your loss.

  15. Jason says:

@Udi – Thanks for the kind sentiment.

  16. @Jason, Sorry for our loss and thank you for sharing your feelings with us. Now that I have kids of my own I can relate to your comments on how kids keep you moving forward without realizing it.

  17. Vladimir Jankovic says:

@Jason: Sorry for your loss… Family is the best way to get through sad events like this.

  18. David says:

Thanks for another interesting show both. I’m really sorry to hear about Jason’s mum – it’s a massive thing in a man’s life. You’re lucky to have family to pull you through it.
That said, I agree with some other comments about grilling Justin. At the risk of being an embarrassing #ssh#le who’s misunderstood harmless banter between friends, why all the nasty remarks these days? Does he owe you money? Is it an America/England thing??
Save the venom for all the bad guys out there, not a decent guy like Justin!

  19. Justin says:

@david – It is harmless we rib each other all the time πŸ™‚

  20. Jason says:

@David – If my grilling of Justin is coming across as anything more than friendly banter or me just being skeptical of his occasional new-age health claim, it’s only because I’m trying to hold him accountable to his stated diet and exercise goals. And the reason that’s important is that he’s suffering from a number of chronic and quite serious health issues (diabetes, fatty liver, Celiac disease and obesity) that all represent a threat to his life. Justin is my friend and “real” friends tell you the truth even when you don’t want to hear it. Due to the fact that he seems unable to give up drinking alcohol, engage in any kind exercise, or lose the weight he needs to lose, I’m afraid not enough people close to him are staying on him about it. But maybe it’s just a bit too heavy of a topic to talk about on the show and is something we should discuss in private, especially if it’s making him or our listeners uncomfortable.

But outside of that I think it may just be that we don’t always agree on things.

  21. David says:

Excellent – well thank god I went ahead and submitted that to the message board then, cos for a minute I was worried I might end up looking stupid or something. I’ll get me coat πŸ™

  22. Justin says:

@David – Jason just cares to much, that’s all!
