119: TZ Discussion – The World’s Last jQuery Convert

Justin and Jason discuss the surprising success of StartupGuild and the software that’s powering it, why Jason is begrudgingly making the move to jQuery and why Justin hates REST, why Jason uses an HSA for his family’s health plan and Justin’s idea for offering a group health plan through StartupGuild, how the US is using socketpuppet software as a propaganda mechanism, how Justin is using jQuery Mobile for his new secret project, and whether or not TechZing is a “bootstrapping” show.

  1. I’m very interested in hearing about the SG health care progress. I’ve been an active HSA user for the past eight years or so, and am quite happy with it.

  2. I found the healthcare situation especially interesting since I live in Australia and healthcare for the most part is free as its paid for through taxes and you need only pay more if you earn over a certain threshold or you feel like it.

I dont know which system works out better in the end, but I can honestly say I have never worried about medial expences from antibiotics through to hostpital stays and the like.

I wonder if anyone who comments has any intelligent throughts on the comparison? I would really like to know the differences between them.

Bad news, you’re not the last :). I was on some css3html5 conference in the summer and a speaker was doing the show of hands. He was trying to show how times have changed and one of the questions was “everybody uses a jQuery or something similar now, raise your hand if you don’t”, out of 70 people, only I raised the hand. It was funny.

I have several reasons not to use it, and basically none for using it. If I need something like a datepicker (which I don’t want to reinvent) I use MooTools’ components because jQuery UI is horribly slow.

    Jason,

Sounds like you need to add an item to the top of your how to do a startup with kids:

    #1 First, marry Sandy.
    #2 …

  5. The migration of StartupGuild to Yammer is making a tremendous positive impact. It also is a great example of how Yammer can be used in the enterprise.

Jason, it’s good thing you’re implementing jQuery into the AppIgnite platform. jQuery has definitely become a de-facto standard in many enterprises and many web sites. This will make it easier for your customers to customize or add on to what you generate. I think it’s normal to find the syntax and idioms a bit weird at first but once you implement a significant app you will not look back. Guyon’s suggestion to use the plugin model makes a lot of sense – but I do agree that there is a bit of learning curve.
Also you totally need to write your version of the queued Ajax request plugin – you will get quite a bit of visibility once you publish it and blog about it. Talk about increasing the LSA too! 🙂
Justin rant on REST also made me laugh (I feel your pain too). I come from the long lineage of distributed objects, CORBA and SOAP, and REST is yet another approach to tackle too especially since it has too become the de-facto on the Internet.

@Steve French – I’m currently following up on the health care idea and while it’s probably going to be complicated, my guess is that it could work if we can get enough people interested. I’ll talk about it some more on the next discussion show.

  7. Jason says:

@Janko – Wow, 1 out of 70! Those aren’t good odds. I guess these days coding in raw Javascript without the benefit of a library like jQuery is akin to coding in C or even assembly. It can be done and is necessary in some cases, but a diminishing few will actually engage in it.

  8. Jason says:

@Nethy – Sandy loved your comment. 😉 Yeah, I think Sandy is a big reason that I’m still able to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams while being a husband and father. Unfortunately, I think Sandy is kind of an exception with this kind of stuff and that few women would be as helpful, patient and resilient as she’s been. Anyway, we’ll probably talk about it on the next show because I think it’s an interesting topic.

  9. Jason says:

@Philippe Monnet – I agree that the Yammer solution is way more engaging than the forum plugin that Justin originally tried and I think it has a lot to do with why StartupGuild is working so well.

Also, I agree that jQuery is the way to go for Appignite generated applications and I’m glad that Guyon convinced me of that. You can only fight the tides for so long and the jQuery tide is a damn strong one.
