299: TZ Discussion – How Justin Got His Groove Back

Justin and Jason discuss Colby’s upcoming football season, a postmortem of their first Space Empires 4X game, how Colby keeps beating Jason at Star Realms and seemingly every other game they play, the latest with Nugget and why Ken and Justin are no longer working together, the latest developments with Math Academy, including Jason’s class, the documentary, the district pilot program, the software platform and Battle Math, an update on Jason’s (self-diagnosed) peripheral neuropathy, why the fathers of the Internet revolution want engineers to reinvent the web, the Scientific American article on how to increase your intelligence, how retirement contributes to physical and mental decay and why society is structured as a two-phase work/post-work system, why Jason believes in choosing quality of life over money, the positive effects of Justin’s newly structured work day and how John Humphrey helped Jason acquire BattleMath.com.

    So good to have you guys back. I can not wait to listen tomorrow on the way in to work. Checking out the game links. Very cool. Space Empires 4X reminds me of a game we played in high school in the mid 80s. Yeah, I’m old 🙂

    Star Fleet Battles. http://www.starfleetgames.com/

    Was very neat game though a little complicated.

    I’m very interested in trying Space Empires… Will need to round up a couple of old buddies and relive the past – ha ha

    Another interesting show so far (only half way through). After listening to Justin’s Nugget update I thought of this week’s episode of Startups for the Rest of Us episode where Rob and Mike talked about this year’s MicroConf. They say they are planning two conferences back to back, the regular conf and another one aimed at those just trying to start a startup. Seems like the new conf might be a good fit for cross-marketing between it and Nugget. Anyway, just a thought.

    I felt for Justin during the Star Fleet Battles discussion. It’s so hard to learn a new complex game when first read the rules. Only way is to jump in and learn as you go. A couple of suggestions for great games that I’ve played are Agricola and Caverna (or anything else by Uwe Rosenberg). It’s not space, though, so Colby probably won’t go for it 🙂

    Nice to catch up on the progress for the various projects y’all are working on.

    @Justin, I saw a shoutout for Nugget on a blog post: roadmap.space
    Seen on a Hacker News thread.

    It may have made the school look bad but the documentary I would want to see would include Jason sweating and swearing while making calls, driving around, trying to get a class-time, cleaning the classroom etc etc. To me, that’s a big part of the story and what’s inspiring. It would show how much he believes in these kids and his approach. I would even include some shots of you guys doing Techzing…talking about BattleMath etc.
