“Motivation half-life” – nice distillation of a concept
I used to work for a company that made add-ons to another company’s products. Occasionally, those products would integrate similar functionality to our add-ons, or make modifications that would break out add-ons. How concerned are you about Trello implementing the features that are key to your value proposition. I guess with Trello, the fact that they have a public roadmap ( https://trello.com/b/nC8QJJoZ/trello-development ) may make so of this easier to have some confidence about the direction of your company,
In general any time you work on integrations, getting your value absorbed by the source of your value is something that seems a bit unsettling, but then again, as there is that delta between what is available and what the market will pay for is always an interesting place to investigate.

That is definitely a concern. I know Joel Spolsky called it “Grabbing coins from in front of a steam roller” or something like that!
I’m not currently very concerned. I think in the early days what I was building could very easily have been built into Trello and it was something I was less confident about. These days with burndown charts, cumulative flow diagrams and cycle times etc. I’m less concerned. I think while those things are very useful to some people they don’t enough mass appeal that Trello would include them in their core product. To do so would likely just confuse a lot of people and I think Trello have deliberately tried not to include those sort of things and keep the product lightweight in the past.
Of course, I could be wrong! in which case if I’m ever back on the show perhaps it’ll be as a penniless miser as a warning to others thinking of building plugin businesses 🙂
