Techzing 28 – Exploration vs. Exploitation

Justin and Jason discuss why Jason hasn’t released his secret project, how coding is a marathon and not a sprint, the pros and cons of the minimum viable product, Tweetminer’s progress and revenue projections, startup advice in exactly three words, MongoDB, the value of market research, whether blogging is really worth the effort, learning from side projects, the status of Justin’s secret project and the productivity hacks of Hemmingway and Seinfeld.

    great show guys!

  2. John says:

    Totally with Jason on the MVP thing. I have a MVP that I’ve released which was shit but met with moderate success. The moderate success is preventing me from releasing the software I really want to release.

  3. John says:

    omg, wtf Jason you don’t use source control. HOLY SHIT. I am a single developer and I use branches!

  4. @joe Thanks! 😉

  5. @John Totally! And that’s exactly what I don’t want to have happen with my project. If you have a funded startup, or if you and your co-founders have quit your jobs to work on the startup, then yeah, figuring out a revenue stream and market fit are more important than building something you just want to build. But if it’s a side project then I think you have the luxury of going after something that is fundamentally interesting to you as primary goal. If you can then figure out a way to generate income from the effort, then that’s just icing on the cake, instead of the other way around.

  6. @John I know, I know I’m lazy and I’m a heretic. 😉

  7. John says:

    I’m in it to make money, not to build stuff I want to build. I think you need to get into that frame of mind too otherwise you’ll have a never ending project.

  8. @John That is definitely a risk.

  9. Hi guys, I definitely enjoy listening to your podcasts. Very genuine content and bantering, love it!
    I have been working on my own personal secret project for a few months, and Jason I totally feel the pressure too. You guys have been providing a lot of inspiration so thanks. I have been trying to follow the same goal of the end of the year and I can relate to what Jason is saying in terms of not being really ready. 🙂
    You have taught me to keep asking myself “what prevents me from going live today?” and that is a great motivator to prioritize the minimum list of features and tests.
    Keep on the great work!

    Hi guys, enjoying the podcast btw, keep up the good work.

    I’m just reading through http://www.neildavidson.com/dontjustrollthedice.html and there was a claim in there that adding additional pricing options above your current top level pushes people towards your current higher pricing options (p39 of the pdf if you want a look.) The example given is a fast food place offering drinks in small, med, large and jumbo will sell more Large drinks than one which doesn’t offer a jumbo option. The theory being people will generally think of themselves as probably being pretty average so will plump for an option in the middle of the list, especially if pricing makes the step from med to large seem like a bargain vs the cost of the minimum product.
    Any thoughts? Should/could you add a jumbo option to tweetminer, even if it’s not offering anything people need?

    Also, a bit out of date I know, but I think the idea of calling your web prescence exoJason

  12. Robin says:

    bah, hit submit to early sorry,

    final bit of that sentence was

    … is brilliant

    ta,
    Robin

  13. Jason says:

    @Robin
    That’s interesting about the jumbo option. I’ll check out the PDF.

    Counting you I think maybe two people now think Exojason makes sense. Unfortunately, most people, and that includes Justin, don’t get it. 😉 Oh, well, it’s not like I’ve done anything with it really.

    Have been enjoying the show now for almost 10 episodes.

    Really like the non formalness of it all, sometimes rambling. But the rambles are things I can almost always relate to.

    Looking forward to seeing the 30th episode role out.

    Chris

  15. Jason says:

    @chris
    Thanks so much! It really is nice to get positive feedback in the comments and makes me want to do the next show. In fact, we need to do one today now that I think about it!

    I’m probably the one most guilty of the rambling, but I’ll try to tighten it up a bit and stay on point. 😉

  16. Justin says:

    @chris
    Jason needs a 30 second egg timer each time he takes the mic 😉 Awww, but we love it really. Thanks for the kudos 🙂

    I should really post this in the podcast 29, talking of rambling and having listened to podcast 29 the other day. Rambling has now been taken to a whole new level.

    More on that in the correct place. 🙂
