Justin and Jason (along with guest host Alex Gemmell), discuss how Justin and Alex first met and their early experiences using Agile methods, Alex’s work with Formula One racing, whether or not soft deletes are a bad idea, InnoDB vs MyISAM, taking advantage of micro opportunities, a flattering write-up about the show from Mark Pearl, Jason’s new blog Codus Operandi, Justin and Jason’s blogging challenge, Justin’s blog, web widgets for mobile devices, FOWA – the Future of Web Apps conference, how 20 popular websites looked when they launched, a little about the movie The Social Networkwhy Wesabe lost to Mint, how Twitter boosted its sign-ups by 29%, whether uploading a blog post to Scribd as a document could generate additional traffic, whether or not YCombinator is a waste of time, moving from Windows to OSX, and how Justin and Alex once attempted to do their own podcast.

  1. Oh good lord, I forgot how much I hate hearing myself recorded! This is going to be embarrassing to listen to…

    *presses play**

  2. Here are some Web Widget (or W3C Widget) resources that I was talking about:

    http://www.quirksmode.org/blog/archives/2009/04/introduction_to.html
    http://widget.developer.vodafone.com/

Vodafone are pushing this Web Widget standard because, quite frankly, they have totally missed the boat on the whole mobile Apps thing what with iOS and Android cornering the market. Vodafone therefore clearly need to embrace the open source standard which is pretty their only route to getting a foothold in the market.

  3. Wow – super-extended double-ending episode! 😛

Best quote of the day “your biggest competitor on the web is not another company it’s the ‘back-button’
Really good episode…really inappropriate name – LOL

  5. I really enjoy the shows where you bring on guests like Alex and chat like normal. I like it so much that the podcast I’m starting about JavaScript in the next few weeks will follow that format. I’ll be the main host and will rotate guest hosts.

  6. Justin says:

@Jason – Oops. I’m not so sure we named this episode very well! I hope it doesn’t put future guests off 😉

    (my fault entirely btw)

  7. matt says:

the link to Justin’s blog in the show notes is a 404

  8. Justin says:

    @matt – Thx. Fixed! 🙂

  9. Jason says:

@Dan – Good luck with the new podcast and let us know when you have your first show up.

  10. Jason says:

@Neville – Yeah, I always thought that was a great line.

  11. The show was great. “Artificial Sorta-intelligence” had me cracking up! I just listened to the last three episodes of the Tech News Daily podcast. Wow, talk about making me appreciate TechZing more. I’m offended by the seemingly endless stream of ignorant drivel called Tech News Daily. If I hear another infinitely corny joke from those glorified radio personalities, I think I might just die. TechZing is an entirely different animal. Keep up the great work guys!

  12. Sorry, *its Tech News Today with Tom Merritt not Tech News Daily.
Wish I could edit my comment after posting 🙁

  13. When Justin mentions he’s too nice to be that successful, it kind of reminded me of this article from Steve Blank, which echos back to Jason’s reply of the point to be smart enough not to be screwed over:

  14. Good job with your participation on the discussion show Alex!
Again congrats on your constant innovation with the podcast format Jason and Justin!

  15. Raisins says:

Dock on the right for life. I convince every Mac person to put it on the right and no one I know looks back. It’s annoying on the bottom

  16. Boyter says:

Hey great show! I much prefer this to the new daily format you guys experimented with.

  17. Jason says:

@SingularityHacker – Thanks so much! I’m glad you don’t find us to be annoying like Tech News Today. That would be bad. 😉

You know, I actually tried to listen to a similar show to Tech News Today (Buzz Out Loud – also with Tom Merritt) and I found it hard to listen to as well. I miss Stack Overflow and Cranky Geeks, which have both gone off the air (or web I guess I should day).

By the way, I love your handle / blog title – SingularityHacker. Very cool

  18. Jason says:

@Philippe – Yeah, I thought Alex did a great job and added an extra dose of energy and humor. We’re definitely going to have him back.

I’m glad you find it to be a positive that we keep trying new things even if they don’t always work out. Our next idea is to try doing some TWiT-like panel shows with two our three guests all at the same time. Imagine for instance having Peldi, Derek Sivers and Gabriel Weinberg on all at the same time?! We’ll see if we can make it happen, but I think it could really work.

  19. Jason says:

@Felix – The article looks interesting and I’ve just printed it out for some late night reading.

Also, thanks so much for the generous donation! 😉 That really shocked me when I saw it pop-up in my inbox from IndieGoGo. Frankly, I wasn’t all that optimistic about Justin’s idea to try fundraising for the show, but it looks like I may be proven wrong.

  20. Jason says:

@Boyter – Yeah, unfortunately the daily show didn’t quite work out like we thought it might. But the good news is that even if we try some different things, we’ll always listen very carefully to our listeners and if they aren’t happy we’ll just revert back – kind of like source control! 😉

  21. @Jason So you are on the source control bandwagon now 🙂

  22. Jason says:

@Ben – Yeah, Guyon convinced me to use Subversion for AppIgnite development which is working out pretty well, although if I was really cool I’d be using Git. 😉

  23. Corey says:

Mint won because it was cheaper and worse. But a better experience. 🙂

  24. Will Macdonald says:
