Techzing 36 – Appcelerator and Titanium

Justin and Jason chat with Jeff Haynie about his startup Appcelerator and Titanium – an application that gives you the ability to create native Windows, OSX and Linux apps using Javascript, Python, Ruby, and or PHP, and iPhone and Android apps using Javascript.  Oh, and it’s free and open source too!

Another one? I haven’t even finished listening to the last one!

    Double woot! 🙂

    Thanks guys you’re on a *^$#$ing roll!

Just downloaded this Titanium thingy this morning, so I’m looking to listening to this later!

So I can make iPhone apps with javascript or PYTHON?! Verrry interesting… I guess that means I don’t have to wait for the elusive Flash CS5 iPhone compiler then?!

    🙂

  2. Justin says:

Oops. Python, Ruby, and or PHP is for the desktop version only…

@Ozzy (Bez) I just fixed the description so that it’s a little more clear, but you can only use Javascript to create iPhone and Android apps. I’m now twelve hours into developing my first iPhone app using Titanium and it’s stupid easy.

@Justin thank you for clarifying around 9min – 10min that you need a mac to compile and get running the iphone. Even tho afterwards you guys talk about able to code it on a windows machine. Bottom line you need a mac. At least networked mac. ( I wonder if you could have a server mac… )

Justin, since you’re using Adobe AIR just as a wrapper for your web app, Mozilla Prism might work better for you.

And thanks for another great show.

  6. [poooof!] my mind exploded at 47 mn 18s into the show when Jeff said that you could mix Javascript and Ruby in a desktop app. Not sure I have recovered all my brain cells since. But seriously I could have lost control of my car on my commute in to Denver!

This was a great show and had a lot of technical details. Since I have built some small AIR apps too (using HTML and JQuery) I got enlightened like Justin on why the rendering always seemed a bit off too. I downloaded the Titanium developer IDE and am looking forward to trying it out.

I enjoyed the perspectives on building their startup too. Although I can appreciate that one would make a ton of progress working on a startup fulltime, I definitely side with those who like me have a family and financial responsibilities and could only grow a business over a much longer period of time.

  7. @Philippe Monnet Glad you enjoyed the show. 😉 While I’m not currently as interested in building desktop apps with Titanium, I’ve been likewise impressed with using it to build mobile apps.
